How to recycle / dispose smoke alarms

Search for another material

We accept smoke alarms in your regular trash, and as trash at our Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station.

The radioactive material in a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm/detector is extremely weak. Therefore, it may be safely disposed of in the regular trash.

Some alarm manufacturers will take their own products back, but will not take products made by other companies. The postage is at the consumer's expense.

Do not bring smoke or carbon monoxide alarms to our electronics recycling drop-off. Our electronics recycling contractor does not handle items with radioactive elements.
