Future Generation Innovators Present Shark Tank

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, August 9, 2016

Wednesday, August 10, 2016; 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

US Food and Drug Administration, Building 31

10903 New Hampshire Avenue

Silver Spring, MD 20903

Thirty youth innovators will present their mobile medical apps developed during a summer incubator program. The presentation will be the first public exhibition following a presentation to White House staff for review and feedback.

The summer incubator program is a partnership program between Montgomery County Public Libraries and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Science & Engineering Laboratories (OSEL). Other partners include Gaithersburg High School, Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers and A Wider Circle.

The program will also include a speaker’s program, participant recognition and participant demonstrations. Three teams will pitch their mobile medical apps to a panel of judges in a shark-tank-style competition. One medical app called “SportsAid” helps students learn to recognize the signs of a concussion; another app helps teens to quickly locate the antidote naloxone to reverse a potentially lethal drug overdose. A third group developed an app called “PotsHub” to help improve the quality of life for patients afflicted with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
