The Council of Government’s regional spring Street Smart campaign to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety kicked off last month. In an effort to continue to bring increased awareness to pedestrian traffic laws, Montgomery County Police selected one day to simultaneously conduct four separate pedestrian enforcement operations in the County. The enforcements will take place at locations with marked crosswalks and in areas that have been identified as pedestrian High Incidence Areas (HIAs) – areas with a higher frequency of pedestrian collisions.

During this enforcement, police will be issuing citations to both drivers and pedestrians who are in violation of the law. Officers will stop drivers who do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and officers will stop pedestrians who fail to obey applicable pedestrian laws.

In the springtime, with the onset of warmer weather and increased outdoor activities; motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are reminded to be extra vigilant. Montgomery County has a long-standing commitment to improving pedestrian safety in our neighborhoods. Drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists must all follow traffic laws and act responsibly.

Media: Call or email your choice(s) of enforcement locations and an on-site interview will be arranged for you with either the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s Coordinator for Pedestrian Safety or the Deputy Director of the Montgomery County Police Traffic Division.
