For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 28, 2024
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will join Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Director Jon Monger and Manna Food Center at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, in Gaithersburg to recognize “Food Waste Prevention Week.” The week highlights the environmental, social and economic impacts of wasted food. County leaders and members of the County’s Edible Food Recovery Working Group will highlight ongoing work in the community to collect edible food donations and redistribute it to help those who do not have consistent access to nutritious foods.
Food that is consumable, like prepared meals, baked goods, fresh produce and canned or boxed food, can be saved from disposal and donated to food rescue organizations. DEP and its partners are working to develop recommendations to increase donations to redirect edible foods to people with unmet needs, to ensure that it is put to the best use and help to address food insecurity.
The event will include remarks from the County Executive, Director Monger and representatives from the Manna Food Center. There also will be a tour of the Manna Food Center during which media members can record video and take photos of the food distribution center and process.
