Montgomery Council President Leventhal Joins with Veterans and the Human Resources Association of the National Capital Area for Job Fair on Friday, May 8

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal will be among the speakers on Friday, May 8, when Human Resources Association of the National Capital Area (DC-SHRM) hosts a free job fair and training event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Council President Leventhal will be the featured speaker at 12 noon and will discuss efforts that the County is making to help veterans rejoin the workforce.

The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at 1 Veterans Place in downtown Silver Spring. Although there is no cost to attend the event, advance registration is required by May 7. There may be a limited number of pre-event registrations available on the day of the job fair.
This event will give active, non-active and retired military personnel and their family members the opportunity to engage with industry professionals actively looking to hire veterans. The theme of this day-long event is, “The Journey: Transitioning from Military to Civilian Careers.”
“Members of the military and their families sacrifice so much to serve our nation,” said Council President Leventhal. “Many of the skills veterans learn from military training, deployment and combat lay the groundwork for successful private-sector careers. I am delighted that the Human Resources Association of the National Capital Area put together this event to showcase what veterans can accomplish—not only on the battlefield, but right here at home.”

Panel discussions will feature lessons learned from veterans who have successfully secured private-sector employment, best practices for highlighting military service and strategies to address the unique job search issues faced by veterans. Breakout sessions will occur in the afternoon and feature one-on-one career coaching for veterans and training for corporate representatives on how to recognize the unique talents veterans have and how to promote veteran-friendly hiring practices.

Veterans and their spouses who are looking for employment should bring their resumes and be ready to engage with human resource professionals regarding employment opportunities.

To register for the event, prior to May 7 send an email to: hrancavets@gmail.com . On-site registration will be limited and will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby of the Silver Spring Civic Building. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for veterans. For more information about the event, contact Sheila Thomas at 248-703-6321 or email hrancavets@gmail.com
