Montgomery Council President Leventhal Receives ‘Mental Health Champion’ Award from Family Services, Inc.

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 5, 2015

Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal, who chairs the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, today was given the “Mental Health Champion Award” from Family Services, Inc. The award was presented at the 25th annual Family Services, Incorporated Montgomery Station Awards Luncheon at the Double Tree Hilton in Bethesda.

Family Services, Inc., a part of the Sheppard Pratt Health System, has provided a wide variety of services to foster health and wellbeing in the home, school and community in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and in other areas of Maryland. The roots of the organization date back more than a century. Among the more than 30 programs it offers are mental health services.

"Family Services is honored to recognize County Council President George Leventhal as our 2015 Mental Health Champion,” said Thom Harr, Chief Executive Officer of Family Services, Inc. "The award recognizes Mr. Leventhal as an advocate for those living with mental disabilities who make positive contributions to their community, exemplify commitment and vision and whose actions have increased the potential for independence in others living with mental health conditions."

Council President Leventhal said non-profit Family Services was an important partner in helping the County provide services to residents in need.

“Montgomery County depends greatly on organizations like Family Services,” said Council President Leventhal. “It meets the needs of some of our most challenged residents, including those with mental illness, individuals recovering from substance abuse, victims of domestic violence and families with very low incomes. My committee at the County Council works hard to see that these services are provided effectively and professionally by first-rate providers including Family Services. I am grateful for this award recognizing our efforts to improve the lives of these residents of our County.”
