Montgomery County Councilmembers George Leventhal and Tom Hucker to be Featured Guests TODAY in Special Editions of ‘Tuned In’ Radio America Show

For Immediate Release: Friday, September 4, 2015

At 2 p.m. TODAY Council President Leventhal and representatives of Safe Grow Montgomery will participate in the first half of a special edition of En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned In with the Montgomery County Council), a weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540 AM) to discuss his proposed Bill 52-14 that would limit the use of lawn pesticides.

Julie Taddeo of Safe Grow Montgomery, an organization which advocates for a ban on the use of lawn pesticides, will talk about how residents can still have great looking green lawns without the use of harmful pesticides. They will also discuss how the county could encourage greener and more sustainable practices for landscaping projects and will seek further participation of the community in the process of reviewing this bill.

Bill 52-14 was introduced late last year by Council President Leventhal. The Council held two well attended public hearings on the matter at the beginning of 2015 and the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee has been meeting with different experts from a variety of sectors on this issue.

At 3 p.m. TODAY Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker will join two members of the Downtown Silver Spring restaurant community to talk about the upcoming Sept. 8-13 Silver Spring Restaurant Week in the second half of today’s special show.

Councilmember Hucker, who represents Council District 5 that includes Downtown Silver Spring, conceived the idea to begin a new tradition of Silver Spring Restaurant Week to show off the many eateries in the area. About three dozen restaurants have committed to have fixed-priced lunch and dinner specials during the week.

Joining Councilmember Hucker during the 30-minute show will be Oscar Jimenez, the executive chef of the 8407 Kitchen Bar, and Alfredo Mazariegos, district manager for the 8407 Kitchen Bar and Mrs. K’s Restaurant & Barrel Bar. Both restaurants are participating in Restaurant Week.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered into a community partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs and provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions of Councilmembers. The partnership includes the 30-minute weekly show at 2 p.m. each Friday on the Washington Region's most popular Spanish language station.

The show is hosted by Juli Ríos Little. Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and occasionally the show provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents and businesses.

In addition to the radio broadcast, the show can be heard via the Internet at: http://radioamerica.net/en-vivo/. A link to an audio replay of each week's show is available at the County Council's web site at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council.
