Wheaton Community Recreation Center Closing April 1

For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 31, 2016

Montgomery County Recreation’s Wheaton Community Recreation Center will permanently close to the public at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1. The closure will mark the first step in the construction of a new combined facility for the Wheaton Community Recreation Center and Wheaton Public Library, which is scheduled to open in 2018.

“The Wheaton community has been waiting for a new center for many years,” said Recreation Department Director Gabriel Albornoz. “We are excited to be taking the first step towards opening a new, state-of-the-art community recreation center.”

During construction, residents are encouraged to use any of the 20 other community recreation centers in the County. The closest community recreation centers to the Wheaton location are the Mid-County Community Recreation Center located at 2004 Queensguard Road, Silver Spring and the Bauer Drive Community Recreation Center located at 14625 Bauer Drive, Rockville.

Most programming at the Wheaton Community Recreation Center has been relocated to other centers. For questions about programming, residents can call 240-777-6840.

For updates on construction of the new community recreation center and library complex, residents can visit the Department of General Services’ Neighborhood Projects page at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DGS-BDC/NeighborhoodProjects.html.
