Montgomery 'GreenFest,' solar panels for homes to be featured topics at 2:30 p.m. TODAY, April 29, on County Council Radio America show

For Immediate Release: Friday, April 29, 2016

Lisa Feldt and Bryant Martinez of the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection will be the featured guests at 2:30 p.m. TODAY, Friday, April 29, on En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned In with the Montgomery County Council), a weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540 AM). They will talk about the County’s second annual “GreenFest” celebration that will be held on Saturday, April 30, at the Takoma Park Community Center. They also will discuss the feasibility of putting solar panels on homes.

The discussion on solar panels follows the Montgomery County Council’s efforts to encourage the use of renewable energy.

GreenFest, a free event, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. community center located at 7500 Maple Ave. in Takoma Park. The welcoming program in the main auditorium will include County Council President Nancy Floreen and Councilmembers Roger Berliner, Tom Hucker, George Leventhal and Hans Riemer. The opening ceremonies also will include County Executive Ike Leggett, federal Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy, Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin and City of Takoma Park Mayor Katie Stewart.

GreenFest is the County’s premier environmental festival and combines entertainment, exhibitors, films, food and workshops to provide a day of fun for the whole family. The event brings together County residents and businesses who want to build a greener, healthier community, both locally and globally.

Entertainment opportunities will include music on the outdoor stage from 11:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. featuring an Ethiopian dance troop, fiddlers and a jazz band. At 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium there will be a special screening of the award winning documentary, E.O. Wilson: Of Ants and Men.

Teens can participate in a workshop on becoming an environmental leader, while younger kids can have fun at rope-assisted tree climbing with Montgomery Parks, arts and crafts and a story reading at the Takoma Park Library.

Other event highlights will include an electric vehicle show where attendees can test drive an all-electric Nissan Leaf. There also will be a native plant sale and a GreenFest scavenger hunt. Approximately 100 vendors and exhibitors will be on site to provide environmental education and information regarding trends and ideas about how people can lead a greener life.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered into a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one- hour show each Friday on the Washington Region’s most popular Spanish language station.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and occasionally the show provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.

In addition to the radio broadcast, the show can be heard via the Internet at: http://radioamerica.net/en-vivo/ . Video links with a summary of the show are available each week at the County Council's newly-redesigned, mobile friendly web site at:  www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council.
