impact of new County budget, illegal dumping of trash

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 27, 2016—Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro, who chairs the Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, will be the featured guest at 2:30 p.m. TODAY, Friday, May 27, on En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned In with the Montgomery County Council), a weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540 AM). Among the topics she will talk about is the County’s Fiscal Year 2017 operating budget, which was unanimously approved by the Council on May 26.

The committee Councilmember Navarro chairs oversees many key aspects of the budget, which will go into effect on July 1. She also is a member of the Council’s Education Committee. The new budget places a high priority on hiring more teachers to help reduce class sizes at many schools and on new programs that will address the “Achievement Gap” between white and Asian students and Latino and black students.

She also will talk about the six-year Capital Improvements Program that was unanimously approved by the Council. That budget includes funds to accelerate the schedule for building of new schools and refurbishing certain existing schools.

Councilmember Navarro also will discuss a new County measure that will increase fines for illegally dumping trash. Councilmember Navarro and Councilmember Craig Rice were the lead sponsors of Bill 1-16 that should discourage regular violators from routinely dumping trash on properties.

This week’s show will be hosted by Andrea Sarralde, a veteran of the Washington area media who will become a regular member of the broadcast team on En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery .

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered into a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one- hour show each Friday on the Washington Region’s most popular Spanish language station.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and occasionally the show provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.

In addition to the radio broadcast, the show can be heard via the Internet at: http://radioamerica.net/en-vivo/ . Video links with a summary of the show are available each week at the County Council's newly-redesigned, mobile friendly web site at:  www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council.
