Montgomery County Council to meet with new MCPS Superintendent Jack Smith
Also on Monday, July 18: Committee discussion on

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 15, 2016—The Montgomery County Council at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, July 18, will continue its series of informal meetings with leaders outside of County Government when it meets with new Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Smith. That meeting will come after a morning meeting of the Council’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee that will address a proposal to increase the County minimum wage to $15 per hour by the year 2020.
The HHS Committee, which is chaired by Councilmember George Leventhal and includes Councilmembers Roger Berliner and Craig Rice, will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live on County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon) and also will be streamed live through the Council web site at http://tinyurl.com/z9982v8 .
The meeting with Superintendent Smith will be held in the Sixth Floor Conference Room. This will be the first meeting between the Council and Superintendent Smith since he officially took office on July 1. The meeting is open to the public, but will not be televised.
The HHS Committee will be meeting for the second time on Bill 12-16 that would increase the County minimum wage incrementally beyond the current legislation that will increase the County minimum wage to $11.50 per hour by July 2017. At the first committee meeting, the sentiment was to gather additional information on the impact of the current legislation regarding the minimum wage before making a recommendation on Bill 12-16. Councilmember Marc Elrich is the lead sponsor of the bill.
The HHS Committee also will continue its discussions on improving health and human services delivery in the East County section of the County.
