ROCKVILLE, Md., August 18, 2016—A series of free Friday outdoor movies shown on a large screen on Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring will continue on Friday, Aug. 19, with the showing of When We Were Kings. County Councilmember Tom Hucker is one of the sponsors of the “Silver Screen” series that is adding to the area’s family night life.

Veterans Plaza is located at the intersection of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, adjacent to the Silver Spring Civic Building. Movies begin after dusk, between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Free parking after 7 p.m. is available in the nearby County parking garages. Attendees should bring low-rise chairs or blankets for seating.

The remaining lineup of movies in the series:

  • Friday, Aug. 19: When We Were Kings
  • Friday, Aug. 26: Back to the Future
  • Friday, Sept. 9:  Paris Blues (Silver Spring Jazz Festival screening)
  • NOTE: There will not be a movie on Sept. 2 due to Labor Day Weekend

Outdoor films are returning to the corner of Ellsworth and Fenton for the first time since 2006. At that time, neither the plaza nor the Silver Spring Civic Building existed.

In addition to Councilmember Hucker, sponsors of the new film series include the Montgomery County Department of Recreation and the Silver Spring Urban District.  The films are being presented by AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.

We hope that families come out and enjoy Silver Screens, and hope to make this an annual summer event the community looks forward to.”
