Montgomery County Celebrates African Heritage Month

For Immediate Release: Friday, September 2, 2016

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will kickoff African Heritage Month on Tuesday, September 6, with a special celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place. Montgomery County is the first in the nation to proclaim the month of September as African Heritage Month.

The annual event will include a reception hosted by members of Montgomery County’s African Affairs Advisory Group and will feature musical entertainment and African cuisine. A proclamation will be issued by Leggett. Representatives from Governor Larry Hogan’s office and the office of Congressman Chris Van Hollen will also present citations.

Information will be provided at the celebration on other events taking place during September commemorating African Heritage Month.

The events include, but are not limited to:

  • Sunday, September 4 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. -- Miss Guinea North America 2016

  • Saturday, September 10 from 2 to 3 p.m. -- Aspen Hill Library Present: Soul in Motion – African Music and Dance
    at the Aspen Hill Library, 4407 Aspen Hill Road, Rockville MD 20853;
  • Saturday, September 24 from noon to 9 p.m. -- 7th Annual Pan African Cultural Festival
    at the Silver Spring Civic Plaza, One Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring MD 20910;
  • Sunday, September 25 from noon to 6 p.m. -- Annual Friendship Picnic
    at the Wheaton Regional Park, 2000 Shorefield Road, Wheaton, MD 20902.
  • Friday, September 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. -- Celebrate Diversity
    at Wheaton High School, 12401 Dalewood Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20906
