Jewish Council on the Aging Wins National Award for Street Smart Tired Faces Senior Focused Pedestrian Safety Campaign; MCDOT a Partner

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 21, 2016

The Jewish Council on the Aging (JCA) received bronze level recognition for its Senior Focused Pedestrian Safety campaign from the National Mature Media Awards, the nation’s largest awards program that annually recognizes the best marketing, communications, educational materials and programs for adults age 50 and older. The Montgomery County departments of Transportation, Health and Human Services and Public Information Office were partners in the campaign.

"We are so proud to be recognized as a winner in the Mature Media Awards Program,” said Katy Greenberg, project coordinator for JCA. “This collaborative project would not have been successful without the support of the Montgomery County departments of Transportation and Health and Human Services, the Public Information Office, and an inclusive advisory panel comprised of older adults and people with disabilities.”

Using grant funds, JCA joined the regional Street Smart collaboration and launched a senior focused “Tired Faces” education campaign, posting ads on 76 Ride On buses and 30 bus shelters aimed at drivers; and distributing 500 posters in County buildings and senior living facilities and 1,000 bilingual safety tip cards and reflectors aimed at senior pedestrians. Street Smart is an annual public education, awareness and behavioral change effort in the Washington, DC, suburban Maryland and northern Virginia area that responds to the challenges of pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

The Street Smart campaign, which was launched in 2002, was started by Montgomery County using a $50,000 State grant awarded to the County and $50,000 in County funds. This seed money helped leverage the $400,000 to $500,000 annual regional effort, which is now directed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and is supported by federal, state, county and local agencies from suburban Maryland, the District of Columbia, and northern Virginia.
