Public Invited to Public Meeting on MD 586 Veirs Mill Road Bus Rapid Transit Study on September 28

For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 22, 2016

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), will hold a public meeting on potential Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) options on MD 586 (Veirs Mill Road). The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 28 between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Executive Office Building Cafeteria, Terrace Level, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD  20850. There will be no formal presentation.

The public is invited to visit display stations staffed by project team members to learn more about the BRT, how it would work and what it could look like, the study process and schedule, the purpose of the project, and the proposed alternatives. Project team members will be available to answer questions and to receive comments. The public is welcome to stop by anytime within the allotted hours.

BRT is a transit system that uses specialized buses to provide faster and more reliable service than a traditional bus system, while providing the flexibility to meet transit demand. BRT features can include upgraded stations, pay before you board fare collection, green light priority, improvements at intersections, platform-level boarding and separate/dedicated running ways. The MD 586 Veirs Mill Road BRT Study team evaluated potential alternatives for accommodating enhanced transit BRT service along nearly seven miles of the MD 586 corridor from Wheaton to Rockville.

Additional project information can be found at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/brt. The study is funded by Montgomery County and is being managed by MDOT. Those unable to attend the Public Meeting are encouraged to submit questions or comments via email to md586brt@sha.state.md.us or by mail to Ms. Laura Barcena, Consultant Project Manager, Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration, 707 N. Calvert Street, Mail Stop C-301, Baltimore, MD 21202. Comments can be submitted through October 14, 2016.
