Community Service Week Spotlights Montgomery County’s Volunteer Spirit

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Members of the community are invited to sign up to volunteer at one or more of the many service projects planned for the 30th annual Community Service Week, which runs October 16 through 23.

“Community Service Week is a celebration of service and a chance for individuals to learn about organizations that can use their help,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “I urge residents to go online and look for ways they can make a difference.”

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center manages Community Service Week, featuring a wide variety of service projects available through nonprofit organizations across the County. This year’s activities include opportunities to clean up streams and parks, sort clothing and furniture donations for low-income residents and victims of the Piney Branch fire, and also prepare meals – both for people who are homeless and families of sick children. Additional volunteer opportunities include serving as event staff at fundraisers, creating care packages for foster children and painting a health clinic.

Visit www.montgomeryserves.org to see the complete list of available service projects and sign up to help. People of all ages are encouraged to volunteer. For interested students, projects with a graduation cap symbol are pre-approved for Student Service Learning hours.

People who participate in Community Service Week can spread the word about all the good volunteer efforts in the County that week by sharing photos and posts on social media using the hashtag #CSW2016.
