ROCKVILLE, Md., January 18, 2016—Montgomery County Councilmember Marc Elrich, who chairs the Council’s Public Safety Committee, will be the chief sponsor at 7 p.m. TODAY, Wednesday, Jan. 18, as Safe Silver Spring hosts its annual legislative forum. The meeting will be held in the Great Hall of the Silver Spring Civic Building in downtown Silver Spring.

The forum will address public safety measures and criminal justice reforms that will be under consideration this year by the Maryland General Assembly session that began last week and by the County Council.

In addition to Councilmember Elrich, key speakers at the forum will include State Delegate Kathleen Dumais, who is vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee; State Senator Will Smith, who is a member of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee; and Amy Cress of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence.

“I look forward to meeting with the public, advocacy groups, and our state legislators to discuss how we can all work together to make our community a more just place to live,” said Councilmember Elrich. “Our colleagues in Annapolis made great strides on a number of issues raised at last year’s Safe Silver Spring forum, from the passage of Noah’s Law to combat drunk driving, and the Justice Reinvestment Act, which will aid thousands in turning their lives around. But there remains a lot of work to be done on topics ranging from bail reform to keeping guns out of the hands of domestic violence abusers. We remain committed to making progress on public safety and criminal justice issues at the local and state level.”
