For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 31, 2017
The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin rehabilitation of a bridge on Seminary Road over I-495 in the summer of 2017. The project will take about a year to complete and will replace the riding surface and girders and strengthen the concrete supports to improve safety and mobility and reduce maintenance costs. The project is part of SHA’s Bridge System Preservation program.
During construction, SHA will close one side of Seminary Road, but will keep two lanes of the road on the opposite side open to traffic at all times. During the first stage of construction, the entrance from Seminary Road to Gwyndale Drive will be closed for approximately four months. This closure will prevent vehicles from exiting into traffic on the open side of Seminary Road from Gwyndale Drive, where visibility will be difficult. Residents who live on the west side of Seminary Road between the bridge and Gwyndale Drive will have access to Seminary Road by way of Birch Drive. A concrete barrier on Seminary Road will be installed to allow those residents to safely enter their driveways from Seminary Road southbound.
Traffic traveling northbound on Seminary Road to residences along Gwyndale Drive and Seminary Road at the south end of bridge will be directed to:
Make a left onto Birch Drive;
Make a slight left onto Sharon Drive and follow to Gwyndale Drive to access residential driveways;
Traffic traveling southbound on Seminary Road to residences along Gywndale Drive and Seminary Road at the south end of bridge will be instructed to:
Make a right onto Birch Drive and;
Make a slight right onto Sharon Drive and follow to Gwyndale Drive to access residential driveways
SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible, while minimizing impacts on local residents, motorists and schools. Weather permitting, SHA expects the bridge work to be completed by summer 2018.
