Nominations Being Accepted for Montgomery Serves and Neal Potter Volunteer Service Awards

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett has announced that nominations are being accepted for the Montgomery Serves and the Neal Potter Path of Achievement awards, to honor some of the County’s most dedicated volunteers.
“Our strong culture of volunteering to help each other is one of the things that makes Montgomery County special,” said Leggett. “I encourage people to nominate individuals, businesses and community groups for these awards so that we, as a County, can recognize and honor extraordinary volunteer efforts.”
Nominations are being sought from the public for two award categories:
Neal Potter Path of Achievement Awards. In partnership with the Commission on Aging and “The Beacon Newspapers,” two residents age 60 or older will be selected for their lifetime of volunteer service to the County. This annual award is named in memory of former County Councilmember, County Executive and longtime community activist Neal Potter.
Montgomery Serves Awards recognizes extraordinary volunteer accomplishments in 2016 – by people who live, work or serve in Montgomery County. There are four award categories:
Youth (individuals 18 years and under and/or youth groups)
Business (businesses that engage their employees as community volunteers)
Community Service – Individual
Community Service – Group
Nominations for all categories will be accepted through Friday, February 24 at 5 p.m. Additional information and nomination forms can be found at www.montgomeryserves.org, by calling the Montgomery County Volunteer Center at 240-777-2600, or by sending an email to serviceawards@montgomerycountymd.gov. Winners are expected to be announced in mid-March.
The prestigious Roscoe Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Award was established by the County Executive to honor community icon Roscoe Nix who gave a half century of service to Montgomery County as president of the Montgomery County Branch of the NAACP and as a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education. First presented in 2012, the Nix award is the County’s equivalent of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. Honorees are selected annually by the County Executive.
All three awards will be presented on Monday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Imagination Stage in Bethesda. Organized by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and sponsored by the Fund for Montgomery, the annual event highlights the good work of seniors, youth, individuals, businesses and community groups that help make Montgomery County a good place to live, work and play.
The Fund for Montgomery, event sponsor for Montgomery Serves Awards, provides private funding for important community-building events, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, World of Montgomery Festival, Community Service Day and ethnic heritage events. The awards ceremony is hosted by Montgomery County through the Volunteer Center, with the assistance of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Montgomery County.
The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Registration is available at www.montgomeryserves.org.
