Montgomery County Council to receive

update from Planning Board

ROCKVILLE, Md., April 3, 2017—The Montgomery County Council at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, will receive is semi-annual report from the County Planning Board including the board’s work plan for the remainder of the year. Among the master plan studies the Planning Board is expected to address in 2017 are those for the neighborhoods of Rock Spring, White Flint 2 and the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Area. The board also is expected to begin a study concerning MARC rail stations.

 

The worksessions will be part of the Council’s regular weekly session that will begin at 9:30 a.m. the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The session, eight public hearings scheduled to run consecutively beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the first of five public hearings on the Fiscal Year 2018 recommended operating budget scheduled for 7 p.m., will be will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM). The channel can be viewed on Cable Channels 996 (high definition) and 6 (standard definition) on Comcast; Channels 1056 (HD) and 6 (SD) on RCN; and Channel 30 on Verizon.

 

The session also will be available live via streaming through the Council web site at http://tinyurl.com/z9982v8 . The meeting will be rebroadcast starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 6.

 

The morning session will begin with proclamation presentations recognizing Holocaust Remembrance Day and Autism Awareness Month.

 

The semi-annual Report of the Planning Board to the Council typically occurs in the spring and fall each year and is an opportunity for the Planning Board to present its proposed work program and brief the Council on major planning and parks issues before the board.

 

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Planning Commission. The report continues the focal points presented in the last two reports of New Suburbanism, Engaging Communities and Strengthening Economic Competitiveness.

During the morning session, the Council will introduce Bill 8-17 that would establish a County Business Services Center. The center would be a dedicated office to assist, inform and advocate on behalf of businesses, including helping businesses interact with County Government. The existing small business navigator would become part of the center.

 

Councilmember Roger Berliner and Hans Riemer are the lead sponsors of Bill 8-17. Councilmembers Marc Elrich, Sidney Katz and Nancy Navarro are co-sponsors.

 

At 7 p.m., Council will hold the first of five public hearings spread over April 4, 5 and 6 on the County’s Fiscal Year 2018 operating budget. More than 150 people are expected to express views about specific items, and the general structure, of the budget over the course of the five hearings.
