The Montgomery County Commission for Women announced winners and honorable mentions for its first annual Girl Power Writing Contest, “What’s It Mean to Be a Woman in 2017?”

There were 106 entries received from students and adults from across the County. The Commission for Women Girl Power contest committee was comprised of selected commissioners. The committee judged winning entries for each of the four categories based on creativity and content.

The Commission offered its congratulations to the following people, who received first place or honorable mention recognition:

  • Adults – First Place (Tie): Amy McGuire and Tiquia Bennett
  • Adults – Honorable Mentions: Katherine Melvin and Chaunetta Anderson
  • High School – First Place (Tie): Fatima Hamdan (Clarksburg HS) and Laura Wagner (Quince Orchard HS)
  • High School – Honorable Mention: Meghana Kotraiah (Thomas Wooton HS)
  • Middle School – First Place (Tie): Calla Reese O’Neil (Bullis School) and Vera Chaudhry (Thomas Pyle MS)
  • Elementary School – First Place: Freya Reslar (College Gardens ES)
  • Elementary School – Honorable Mention: Anna Murray  (Wood Acres ES)

Winners will receive a swag bag and free entrance to an upcoming MCCFW event. Winning entries and honorable mention entries will be posted on the Commission for Women website.
