ROCKVILLE, Md., May 5, 2017—Gang violence, the types of gangs active in Montgomery County and the programs in place to combat their recruiting and activities will be the featured topic today on of En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned In with the Montgomery County Council), the Council’s weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540 AM). This week’s show, which starts at 2:30 p.m., also will focus on options that are available for gang members who want to get out of these activities and for family members and friends who want others close to them to avoid being involved with gangs.
Captain Paul Liquorie, director of the Special Investigations Division for the Montgomery County Police Department; Luis Cardona, the Youth Violence Prevention Coordinator for Montgomery’s Department of Health and Human Resources; and Javier Saavedra, the Outreach and Engagement Specialist of the organization “Identity” will be the featured guests on today’s show.
Since spring of 2015, Montgomery County and other jurisdictions in the Washington metropolitan region began to see another spike in gang-related violence. Montgomery County alone has had 15 gang-related homicides since that time, seven of them tied to the gang known as MS-13.
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered into a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one- hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.
Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
In addition to the radio broadcast, the show can be heard via the Internet at: http://tunein.com/radio/Radio-America-1540-s6029/ .
Video links with a summary of the show are available each week at the County Council's newly-redesigned, mobile friendly web site at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council .
