Community Action VITA Program Now Preparing Amended, Prior Year and Current Year Tax Returns for Low-Income Residents

The Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) partnership, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, is now scheduling appointments through October 31 for amended, prior year and current year tax returns. VITA’s free tax preparation services are exclusively for Montgomery County residents. To qualify, residents must have incomes of less than $54,000.


Appointments are currently available on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Takoma-East Silver Spring Center, located at 8513 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Action Agency offices, located at 1401 Rockville Pike in Rockville.  Appointments are available on July 19, August 16, September 20 and October 18 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Rockville location.    To schedule an appointment online, please visit montgomerycountymd.gov/freetaxhelp or call 240-777-1123. Through the VITA program, residents can apply for or renew an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).  Per the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), ITINs not used on a federal income tax return at least once in the past three years will expire December 31, 2017.  Affected taxpayers who expect to file a tax return in 2018 must submit a renewal application.  For more information, visit the ITIN website at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number-itin .

 

Since 2008, Community Action has provided the only free, year-round tax preparation program in Montgomery County.  In tax year 2016, the VITA program filed tax returns for 2,204 county households, totaling more than $5.4 million in refunds and credits to taxpayers.
