Contributions of Hispanic Americans are Focus of
El Momento Cívico/The Civic Moment on Council’s
Radio America Show on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m.

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 11, 2017— Mayra Cruz-Solís, Latino Liaison for Councilmember Nancy Navarro, Carmen María Centeno, Program Officer and Youth Development Specialist for Liberty Promise, and Sofia Cabral, local student and former Liberty Promise member, are the featured guests on the Friday, Oct. 13 broadcast of En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned in with the Montgomery County Council), a weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). They will discuss the many contributions of the Hispanic community to Montgomery County.  This prerecorded show originally aired on Sept. 22.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place nationwide between September 15 and October 15 each year, celebrates “the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.” Roughly 200,000 Montgomery County residents identify themselves as Hispanic, according to the Montgomery County Planning Department.  More information can be found at:

“El Momento Cívico/The Civic Moment” airs the last Friday of each month and is one component of Councilmember Navarro’s Latino Civic Project that features topics related to civic engagement and understanding the various functions of County government. Councilmember Navarro started the Latino Civic Project in 2012 to promote and strengthen civic participation among Latinos and immigrants.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one- hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
