Discuss Increasing the Minimum Wage to $15
in Montgomery County Starting in 2021
on Council’s Weekly Radio America Show at 2:30 p.m.

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 17, 2017—Councilmember Marc Elrich and CASA representative George Escobar are the featured guests on today’s 2:30 p.m. episode of En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council) En Sintonia is a weekly program on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). During the first 30 minutes of the program, the guests will discuss Bill 28-17, which was unanimously passed by the Council to raise the minimum wage to $15 in Montgomery County starting in 2021 for large employers. Councilmember Elrich was the lead sponsor of the bill and Councilmembers Leventhal, Hucker, Navarro, and Council Vice President Riemer were cosponsors. which the Council passed unanimously last Tuesday, November 7. The minimum wage is currently $11.50. Bill 28-17 will increase the minimum wage to $15 by 2021 for large employers (51 or more employees), and gradually increase wage rates in subsequent years after for medium-sized businesses, small employers, and nonprofits. CASA has been a long-time advocate for raising the County’s minimum wage.

In the second half hour of the program, immigration attorney Silverio Coy will join the other guests to discuss the status of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Act, as well as the recent decision of the Department of Homeland Security to terminate Temporary Protected Status for many immigrants.
 
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one- hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
