WMATA to Close Red Line Between Silver Spring and Fort Totten November 25-December 10; In Addition, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont Stations Will be Closed December 2-3

2017 Red Line Capital Improvement Project

 

 

Basic Information About the Closures

  • No Red Line trains will operate between Silver Spring and Fort Totten November 25 - December 10. Limited free shuttle buses will be available between stations during normal Metrorail operating hours.

  • The Takoma Station will be closed. No parking will be available – the Park & Ride Lot, Kiss & Ride and all metered parking spaces will be closed to the public.

  • Customers should allow extra travel time and expect some crowding as trains will arrive less frequently than normal.

  • In addition, on the weekend of December 2-3, the Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont stations will be closed. Limited free shuttles will be available between stations.

Helping to Notify Commuters 

MCDOT has placed ads on the interior of all Ride On buses to notify commuters about the upcoming Red Line closure.


Promoting Telework and Transportation Alternatives

  • Open the TRiPS store at the Silver Spring Transit Center at 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m. in time for customers to purchase MARC train tickets for the first morning train.

  • Offer ticket sales and other services at MCDOT’s Mobile Commuter Store at Wisconsin Circle in Friendship Heights.

  • Offer telework assistance by contacting MCDOT’s Commuter Services. Watch a short video about teleworking.

  • Encourage use of employer Fare Share transit and vanpool benefits and State tax credits for vanpools, buses and MARC train.

  • Provide assistance and incentives for employer-based carpooling.

  • Offer dockless bikes and Capital Bikeshare options.

Enhancing Traffic Flow

  • Monitor traffic conditions and make traffic signal adjustments in real time.

  • Provide enhanced response to disabled vehicles or other traffic impediments.

  • Extend rush hour parking restrictions beyond rush hours on Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue if warranted.
