Impacts of TPS Cancellation on Children
are Focus of Council’s Radio America Show,
Today, February 2 at 2:30 p.m.
ROCKVILLE, Md., February 2, 2018—Gabriela Romo, psychologist and bilingual counselor; Nelsy Umanzor, TPS Alliance representative; Yamila Pino, Prospero Latino Representative; and Silverio Coy, immigration attorney, are the featured guests on this episode of “En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado” (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing today, February 2 at 2:30 p.m. on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). The guests will discuss the psychological and emotional effects that the potential cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) may have in Salvadoran, Nicaraguan, and Haitian families. Stress and fear of losing parents or being relocated can cause anxiety, depression, and disruptive behavior in children. The show will provide information on the resources available to TPS beneficiary families through the County that are specifically focused on children.
After the Trump administration decided to cancel TPS for Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and Haitians, it is important for TPS beneficiaries from these countries of origin have a plan of action to ensure the wellbeing of their children and property holdings. According to CASA, Montgomery County is home to more than 10,000 TPS holders, primarily from El Salvador, who could face deportation, the loss of property and estrangement from their American-born children. For this reason, the County is working to educate residents who are TPS beneficiaries.
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.
Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
