Preparing for Tax Season and
Montgomery County Public Schools’ Capital Budget
are Focuses of Council’s Radio America Show,
Today, February 9 at 2:30 p.m.

ROCKVILLE, Md., February 9, 2018—Maureen Larenas-Rivas, Program Specialist in the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Action Agency; Deicy Rivera, accountant; and Melisa Rivera, spokesperson for Montgomery County Public Schools, are the featured guests on this episode of “En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado” (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing today, February 9 at 2:30 p.m. on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). Maureen Larenas-Rivas will discuss the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which joins IRS certified professionals and volunteers to help low-to-moderate income families maximize their tax refunds and credits, including EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). Deicy Rivera will discuss changes in the tax code this year, the potential impacts of those changes, and take questions from listeners.

On the second part of the program, Melisa Rivera will talk about the enrollment growth driving the proposed Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for Montgomery Count Publics Schools and its work with the Council to plan for capital improvement projects such as improving and expanding schools and infrastructure. One of the Council’s top priorities is working with the Montgomery County School Board to advocate for additional funding from the State of Maryland to fund public schools. The County Executive submits a CIP every two years along with the capital budget, both of which are then reviewed and voted on by the Council.
