Press Releases - Department of Transportation

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 20, 2018

From July 21 through Labor Day, Metro will shut down the Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations on the Red Line for maintenance. Buses will be available to provide shuttle service from Fort Totten to NoMa. In addition to the shutdown of these two redline stations, Metro will conduct maintenance projects this summer and fall that will affect every line.

At the Rhode Island Avenue station, workers will handle structural issues, which have been apparent since September 2016 when the station was closed for several days after a chunk of ceiling concrete fell inside the station. Later that year, engineers stabilized the structure during the SafeTrack surge, but this 45-day project will allow them to complete repairs.

The other maintenance projects Metro has planned this summer and fall include:

  • Blue, Orange and Silver lines - Between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations from August 11 to August 26 there will be continuous single tracking
  • Yellow and Blue Lines - National Airport and Crystal City stations will be closed from November 2 to November 5.
  • Yellow Line - Line will run only between the airport and Huntington station from November 26 to December 9.

In a statement, Metro said the operations were planned and scheduled during times of the year where there are fewer riders, to minimize any inconvenience.
