Design for Life Showcase Set for May 5 at the Silver Spring Civic Building

For Immediate Release: Monday, April 16, 2018

The Montgomery County Design for Life Showcase returns to the Silver Spring Civic Building from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.

This free event provides homeowners with valuable information about creating an accessible home for all stages of life - from a young parent with a baby stroller to an athlete on crutches to empty-nesters who are aging in place and for general mobility needs.

The showcase will feature examples of new and existing homes and will highlight products and designs to reduce barriers for those with mobility issues. The event will cover projects for all types of budgets, and there will be breakout sessions for homeowners to learn how to qualify for property tax credits.

“This an exceptional event that brings building professionals, architects, other designers and product-providers together with homeowners to demonstrate some of the best designs and features available for accessible homes,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “Residents get a chance to see accessible home designs and learn more about the Montgomery County Design for Life property tax credit incentive.”

“It’s an honor for the Department of Permitting Services to sponsor an event that connects residents with professionals who can help them build a new home or make changes to an existing home that enables them to live comfortably in their home through all ages and stages of life,” said Diane Schwartz Jones, director of the Department of Permitting Services.  “Accessible homes reduce the need to move, avoid expenses associated with making other living accommodations, and increase residents’ comfort throughout their lives.”

At the Design for Life Showcase, exhibitors will display examples of Design for Life home projects by CASE Architects and Remodelers and Glickman Design Build as well as features, such as walk-in tubs from Bath Planet by See Thru.  Along with the exhibitors, the showcase will include several breakout sessions, including a question and answer session about the Design for Life Property Tax Credit Program, and two presentations about accessible design.

Design for Life improvements are eligible for a property tax credit.  All Design for Life permits are issued by the Department of Permitting Services. Permits are submitted electronically using eServices, and will be on track to be processed within 30 days.
