Families looking for fun and creative ways to keep their children engaged during the winter break have plenty of options with Montgomery County Public Libraries. All activities are free. Children of all ages are welcome unless the activity description specifically identifies the event as appropriate for a specific age group.
- Candy Cane Scavenger Hunt: Explore the library while enjoying a scavenger hunt for candy canes located throughout the library. Long Branch Library, 8800 Garland Ave., Silver Spring Dec. 1–31; Library open hours.
- Gingerbread Man Hunt: Find the Gingerbread Man who is hiding throughout the library to earn rewards. Hiding places will change every day. Germantown Library, 19840 Century Blvd., Germantown Dec. 24–30; library open hours.
- Christiana Drapkin’s Jingle Bell Jazz for Kids: Christiana Drapkin will sing and lead the audience in a sing-along and other related activities. Bring your jingle bells if you have some. There will also be other fun rhythm instruments. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Twinbrook Chapter.

- Noon Year’s Eve: Cheer in the New Year with a story, a special craft and a balloon drop at noon.

- Winter Break Teen Hangout: Teens in grades 8 through 12 are invited to enjoy an afternoon of crafts, snacks and fun. Registration is required; registration is available here. Davis, Library 6400 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda. Saturday, Dec. 29; 2 p.m.
- Happy Noon Year: Ring in the New Year early with a party at the library with stories, music, crafts and a special countdown. Free tickets distributed 30 minutes prior to the program. Space is limited. Connie Morella Library, 7400 Arlington Road, Bethesda Monday, Dec. 31; 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
- Happy Noon Year’s Eve: Ring in the New Year early with stories, crafts, and a count-down celebration to ring in the “Noon Year!” For ages 3 to 8; ages 5 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
