Montgomery County Participates in National Campaign Designating "We Don't Serve Teens Week"

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Montgomery County’s Department of Liquor Control (DLC) is joining the Federal Trade Commission’s campaign proclaiming the week of September 10 – 15, 2007, as “National We Don’t Serve Teens” week. Timed to coincide with the beginning of the school year, the national designation is used by public and private entities to spread the message that serving alcohol to teens is unsafe, illegal and irresponsible.

“Each one of us has a role to play in helping our young people remain safe,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett. “That includes parents, older siblings, the hospitality industry, limousine company staff and establishments licensed to sell alcohol.”

For the past year, Montgomery County’s DLC has been supporting campaign efforts by distributing point-of-sale materials to businesses licensed to serve and/or sell alcohol and displaying “We Don’t Serve Teens” signs in the 25 county-owned stores. Montgomery County is one of four Maryland counties – in addition to 18 states – that operate as a control jurisdiction by being directly involved in the regulation, sale and distribution of beverage alcohol.

“As a control jurisdiction that operates its own retail stores, Montgomery County is well-positioned to bring this important message into our community,” said DLC Director George Griffin. “We work every day to discourage the abuse of alcohol, particularly involving persons below the legal drinking age. Educating adults about the dangers of providing alcohol to teens is clearly part of our mission to contribute to Montgomery County being a safe and healthy community.”
