ROCKVILLE, Md., April 22, 2021 — Housing Counseling Manager at the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC), Walda Yon; Tenant Education and Service Coordinator at LEDC, Julian Talero; former Maryland Delegate and Immigration Attorney, Maricé Morales; and Detective for the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), Ever Reyes, will be the featured guests on this week’s En Sintonía con El Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing tomorrow at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM).
The first part of the show will cover housing resources and legal assistance for County residents facing evictions. The County has a partnership with four different organizations that are assisting residents with eviction actions and rental support including CASA, the Housing Partnership Initiative, the Montgomery County Renters Alliance and the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC). The guests from LEDC, Walda Yon and Julian Talero, will talk about how LEDC educates residents on the eviction process and can provide legal assistance and mediation services. Also through the County’s Rent Relief Program, families are eligible for up to $12,000 in emergency rent relief for up to 15 months of lost rent. Those in need can apply at MC311.Com/RentRelief.
The second part of the show will include an analysis by former Maryland Delegate and Immigration Attorney Maricé Morales on the Dignity Not Detention Act’s impact on the immigrant community in the region. The new law prohibits the state or any local jurisdiction from entering into contracts for the purpose of detaining immigrants and requires the termination of any existing contracts. It also prevents zoning changes that are often required to create detention facilities.
In the last part of the show, Detective Ever Reyes of MCPD will talk about the recent increase in the number of construction equipment thefts in the County, especially from vehicles. Detective Reyes will provide tips about how workers can protect their equipment and the steps that can be taken to recover stolen goods.
Radio host Lilian Mass will also discuss the County’s fourth Board of Health regulation that provides guidance for graduation ceremonies.
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.
Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents. Release ID: 21-172
