For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 19, 2021
The Council will meet on Thursday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m. to take straw votes on the operating and capital budgets and reconcile the Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The Council will also hold a public hearing and vote on a Special Appropriation to the FY21 Operating Budget for the Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI).
Review: The Council is expected to reach a preliminary agreement on the County’s $6 billion Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 Operating Budget and the FY22 Capital Budget and the Amended FY21-26 CIP.
The Council’s focus throughout their budget deliberations this year was on the County’s equitable recovery and providing relief to residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Final budget action is scheduled for May 27.
The Council staff report for the operating budget can be viewed here and the staff report on the capital budget and six-year CIP will be available on Thursday.
Public hearing and vote expected: The Council is expected to hold a public hearing and vote on a Special Appropriation to the FY21 Operating Budget for the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to support the Asian American Health Initiative's (AAHI) COVID Response and an Amendment to the FY21 Operating Budget for a non-competitive contract award with the Primary Care Coalition.
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up more than 15 percent of the County's population and have been impacted in different ways by COVID-19 including barriers to testing and vaccinations, impacts on mental health from the stress and isolation of the pandemic, and the unique impact of a significant increase in hate incidents and violence, including physical assaults. AAHI has proposed strategies to address these impacts and disparities, and the Department of Health and Human Services will establish a contract with the Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County to provide support for AAHI's pandemic response and incidents of hate or violence against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
