For Immediate Release: Friday, May 21, 2021

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 21, 2021 — Pediatrician and epidemiologist Dr. Ligia Peralta; Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Spokesperson Melisa Rivera; Founder and Executive Director of United for Social Justice Liana Montecinos; and Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Therapist Angela Soto will be the featured guests on this week’s En Sintonía con El Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing today at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM).

Dr. Ligia Peralta and Melisa Rivera will begin the program by providing residents with information on the County’s expanded Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine eligibility for residents ages 12 to 15, as well as MCPS plans for the 2021-2022 school year, including protocols for unvaccinated students.

Following this update, Liana Montecinos will share information on the “Yo Soy Poder” online program that will begin this summer and be held in Spanish. The objective of this program is to provide workshops, mentoring, resources, and a network of support for students who have recently arrived in the United States and want to pursue a higher education. Applications for the program are due by May 29, 2021 and can be submitted on the United for Social Justice website.

Angela Soto and radio show host Lilian Mass will close the program by discussing the impact that the pandemic has had on families, with particular focus on its disproportionate effect on Latino families, as well as the resources available through the Montgomery County’s DHHS and community partners to help those in need.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
