For Immediate Release: Friday, July 23, 2021

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 23, 2021 — The featured guests on this week’s En Sintonía con El Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council) include Karen Greene, a nurse for the Montgomery County Child Fatality Review Program; Lorena Bailey, an investigator for the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP); and Margarita Bohórquez, the interim director for the students, families, school services and international admissions office for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Today’s show airs at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM).

The first part of the show will be a discussion of Montgomery County’s Child Fatality Review Program and the rapid rise in infant deaths in the Latino community resulting from unsafe sleeping conditions. The program’s goal is to educate parents on the factors that can lead to suffocation, strangulation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Following this discussion, Ms. Bailey will address the increase in scams in Montgomery County that are targeting the Latino community. Montgomery County residents have reported scams on rental payments and alleged kidnappings as well as those specifically targeting the elderly. The discussion will focus on ways that residents can prevent falling victim to these scams and the importance of reporting them early by contacting the Office of Consumer Protection. More information on scams and how to report them can be found on their website.

To conclude the show, Ms. Bohórquez will discuss the MCPS enrollment process for children and adolescents who have recently arrived in the County. She will stress the importance of ensuring that students enroll in school as soon as possible and how MCPS works to ensure their academic success.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
