Department of Liquor Control Receives 2008 WRAPPY Award

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 22, 2008

The Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control’s (DLC) adult host responsibility campaign, “Keeping It Safe” recently received the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s (WRAP) 2008 WRAPPY Award for Youth Leadership. Montgomery County was recognized for its support of WRAP’s lifesaving mission to fight against drunk and drugged driving and underage drinking in the Washington-metropolitan area. The award was presented at WRAP’s annual meeting and awards ceremony on October 17.

“There is no single program that will prevent alcohol use among our youth,” said DLC director George Griffin. “Public/private partnerships and education are the most effective tools we can use to keep alcohol out of the hands of those under 21 years of age.”

The “Keeping It Safe” initiative, which began in 2004, was modeled after Ohio’s “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” program. The comprehensive educational program targets adults with host responsibility information and point-of-sale materials for licensed establishments. The program also promotes SAFEline (301-670-SAFE), a number for callers to report underage drinking and adult providers, and SAFEnet (safenet@montgomerycountmd.gov), where individuals can email alcohol-related questions and receive updated alcohol prevention information. Partners include DLC, regulators, police, members of the Drawing the Line on Underage Drinking coalition, Safe and Drug Free Schools, community members and the State’s Attorney’s office.
