For Immediate Release: Tuesday, April 1, 2025

From the Office of Council President Kate Stewart

Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart released the following statement:

“Our federal workforce is experiencing unprecedented upheaval and ongoing threats due to the current administration’s irresponsible decisions and frankly cruel actions. The reckless mass cuts to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health’s labor forces are an assault on science and will have dangerous long-term ramifications for Montgomery County and our nation.

“The Trump administration’s abrupt decision to cut over 10,000 employees across health and human services, including 3,500 jobs from the Food and Drug Administration, is a dramatic blow to our nation’s most critical departments and directly impacts hundreds of Montgomery County residents and their families. These are health professionals who have dedicated their lives to public service. They are the experts who lead public health research on cancer, infant and maternal health, who track and develop life saving vaccines and medications, and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. They are experts responsible for assuring the safety of our nation’s food supply, medications, and medical devices that residents rely on everyday.

“These dedicated civil servants work every day to keep all Americans safe and healthy. I want to express my gratitude and reiterate our ongoing support to the public servants who choose to serve our community and our country.

“During these uncertain times, County leaders are working to provide a wide array of support for those impacted by the unpredictable actions of the Trump administration. We encourage residents in need of support to visit the Council’s United in Service and Support webpage and biweekly webinars for important resources available in our community.”
