For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 7, 2025

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) is hosting a “Spring Fling” adoption event for large dogs on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10. During the event, adoption fees for dogs weighing more than 30 pounds will be covered by Friends of Montgomery County Animals. The shelter is currently full of large dogs looking for good homes.

The Animal Services and Adoption Center is located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. The Center is open seven days a week. Visit the Center’s website for a complete list of hours.

“Dogs continue to enter the shelter every day and staff are struggling to find available kennels. We have had to cut our kennel sizes in half to make room for more dogs,” said Maria Anselmo, MCASAC community relations manager. “These dogs need your help. If you aren’t able to adopt, consider fostering, donating or even just spreading the word.”

Adoptions are first-come, first-served and processed the same-day. Residents should be ready to take their new pet home by bringing a leash and collar.

Details about the adoption process are available at montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt

In addition to adoption, residents can help by fostering a large dog through MCASAC’s foster program. Fostering is free and the shelter provides all necessary supplies. Those interested can sign up at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/volunteer/foster.html

MCASAC also encourages community members to help prevent animals from entering the shelter. Reuniting lost pets with their owners before bringing them to the shelter and donating pet food to local pantries can support pet owners in need. Pet food donations can be dropped off at the shelter.

It provides high-quality sheltering and care to homeless, abused and neglected animals, and promotes responsible pet ownership through adoptions, education, outreach and more.
