Statement by Council President George Leventhal on Proposed County Capital Budget

For Immediate Release: Thursday, January 12, 2006

“The six-year, $2.7 billion capital budget proposed by the County Executive puts the resources where we ought to be putting them.

“We are spending a record amount on school construction in support of Council initiatives to reduce class size and diminish the number of portables. With school enrollment increases leveling off, now is precisely the time to catch up with much-needed improvements.

“We are putting construction dollars into vital projects designed to attack traffic congestion through building new roads, enhancing transit, and providing more options for commuters.

“We are proposing to spend $44 million in transportation, public safety, and library projects for Clarksburg – giving that community the services it deserves and sorely needs.

“I’m especially pleased that the County Executive is moving to address redevelopment of Long Branch Town Center and supporting Adventist Health Care’s plans for the construction of a medical office building and freestanding ambulatory surgery center in the community.

“County Executive Doug Duncan has given the County Council an excellent blueprint for investing in the capital needs of our communities. The Council will be listening to what County residents have to say about the proposal and work closely with the County Executive to craft a budget that works for all of us.”
