Montgomery Councilmember Leventhal to Speak at 6th Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, Oct. 5

For Immediate Release: Friday, September 21, 2012

ROCKVILLE, Md., September 21, 2012—Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal, who chairs the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, will join County Executive Isiah Leggett and more than 50 organizations providing screenings and wellness information on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Sixth Annual Health and Wellness Fair at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Councilmember Leventhal and County Executive Leggett will be the guest speakers at the free event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at One Veterans Place in downtown Silver Spring (at the corner of Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive).

The event will include health screenings that apply to family members of all ages. There also will be wellness activities including Zumba demonstrations.

“The best way to reduce the cost of health care is to reduce the number of people who get sick,” said Councilmember Leventhal. “The best ways to achieve that are for all of us to stay active and get checked regularly to detect early signs of possible problems. This fair will present an opportunity to do both. And it is all in one place—and all free.”

Screenings will be available for cholesterol, carbon monoxide, HIV, blood pressure, vision and hearing, dental, diabetes, glaucoma and cancer.

In addition to the medical information available, the fair will provide instruction on useful and fun ways for people of all ages to exercise—and have fun doing it.

The chief sponsor of the event is DB Consulting Group/Lux Consulting Group, Inc. Other sponsors include the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.
