Montgomery Councilmember Leventhal to Receive Phyllis Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award on Wednesday, Oct. 17 He Will Be 1 of 4 Area-wide Honorees Selected for ‘Working With Nonprofit Sector to Ensure More Vibrant Communities’

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, October 16, 2012

ROCKVILLE, Md., October 16, 2012—Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal, who chairs the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, has been selected as one of four area-wide winners of 2012 Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Awards “created to highlight the work of four elected or non-elected officials who have gone above and beyond in partnership with the nonprofit sector to ensure more vibrant communities.”

Councilmember Leventhal will receive the award during the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s 33rd Annual Meeting and Celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 17, starting at 9 a.m. at the Historic Terminal A Lobby in Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. More than 200 nonprofit, business, philanthropic and government leaders are expected to attend the festivities.

Since 1979, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement has strengthened, promoted and represented its member nonprofit organizations throughout the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. It strives to connect its members to the tools and resources they need to meet their missions. Center members are a diverse group of large and small nonprofits serving communities in Greater Washington, across the nation and around the world.

“It is an honor to be selected for an award such as this one that is focused on work with the nonprofit community,” said Councilmember Leventhal. “Both in my work as chair of the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, and in other aspects of my life, I am dedicated to helping the outstanding nonprofit organizations that do so much to help people in need. The Phyllis Newsome Award is a tribute to an outstanding person who dedicated so much of her life to these organizations and the causes they represent. Phyllis was a friend of mine. I admired her and I feel humbled to be given an award named for her.”

The Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award was named in honor of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s former director of advocacy and community relations after her untimely passing in 2003. Each year the Center recognizes four public officials for this award. One official is recognized from each of the jurisdictions the center supports (the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties).

The process for the nomination and awarding of the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award is based on transparency and membership voting. During the nomination process, the organization asks each member organization and prior winners to nominate one public official who has shown great leadership on behalf of the nonprofit sector.
