ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 8, 2013 – Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal at 8:00 am, Wednesday, January 9 in Rockville, will partner with the Honorable Herman Taylor, former member of the House of Delegates, to host a Montgomery County small and minority business breakfast. The purpose of the breakfast is to discuss business development efforts and other opportunities for small and minority businesses in Montgomery County.
The breakfast will be held at the Stella B. Werner Council Office Building in the 2nd floor cafeteria located at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. One area of discussion will be the County’s Local Small Business Reserve Program. The program, initiated in 2009 and for which Councilmember Leventhal was an original sponsor, mandates that county agencies and departments allocate 20 per cent of their purchases of goods and services from small community businesses. The breakfast will also seek recommendations on how this or other programs can be improved. Representatives from the Department of General Services and the Department of Economic Development will also attend to answer questions and listen to suggestions.
Councilmember Leventhal, who currently serves on the Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee said, “Local small business has long been recognized as a major component of the economic health and vitality of Montgomery County. We should evaluate how well our county’s efforts to promote and support it are working.”
Former Delegate Taylor has long been an advocate for small and minority businesses throughout the state of Maryland. As a Delegate, Taylor served on the House Economic Matters Committee as well as the Banking, Economic Development, Science and Technology Subcommittee. He is currently President and CEO of his company Deskmate Office Products.
