Hyundai thefts decrease by 90%

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 9, 2024

Gaithersburg, MD –Hyundai thefts in Montgomery County have decreased 90% since October of 2023.

The Montgomery County Department of Police created the Auto Crime Enforcement Section (ACES) early last year to address the issue of auto thefts throughout the county.

Through extensive investigations, release of information, and the department’s partnership with the Hyundai corporation, three-day events were held in May and August of this year to offer anti-theft security software installations to Hyundai owners, free of charge. With these events, ACES was able to successfully reduce the number of thefts in Montgomery County.

In October of 2023, 103 Hyundais were reported stolen. In December of 2023, the number of Hyundais reported stolen dropped to 42, indicating a 60% total decrease between October and December of that year.

Since then, the number of stolen vehicles has steadily decreased over the year. As of September 2024, a record low of 35 Hyundais were reported stolen, indicating a 56% total decrease over the eight months between January and September of 2024.

To contribute to our ongoing efforts, please remember to practice safety and lock your cars. If you see something, say something.
