Gaithersburg, MD — On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) led a coordinated traffic safety initiative along MD Route 355 in collaboration with Maryland State Police, Rockville City Police, Gaithersburg City Police, and Chevy Chase Village Police. Approximately 60 officers participated in the operation, which ran from 6 a.m. on December 4 to 3 a.m. on December 5, with a focus on reducing traffic violations and enhancing safety along one of the county’s busiest roadways.
The initiative addressed five areas of enforcement: aggressive driving, pedestrian safety, distracted driving, seat belt compliance, and impaired driving. Officers made 382 traffic stops throughout the day, issuing 165 citations and 330 warnings. Additionally, 19 safety equipment repair orders were issued, and enforcement efforts resulted in two arrests for impaired driving.
As part of the operation, pedestrian safety crosswalk enforcement was conducted at three locations along MD Route 355 at Gunners Branch Road, Veirs Mill Road at Dodge Street, and Chase Avenue. During these details, officers stopped 106 drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
MCPD cadets and the School Traffic Safety Section partnered with Gaithersburg City officers to conduct pedestrian education efforts, distributing pamphlets and engaging with the public at shopping centers along Route 355.
The initiative also included commercial vehicle inspections, resulting in 46 violations, with six commercial vehicles and one driver being placed out of service.
