Montgomery County Police to Conduct Traffic Safety Operation on Route 29

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, April 1, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD – Ensuring the safety of law enforcement, first responders, and stranded motorists, the Montgomery County Department of Police – Traffic Operations Division and partnering agencies will conduct a move over and speed enforcement detail along the Route 29 corridor on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., officers will focus on speeding and failure to move over for stopped vehicles, particularly law enforcement officers conducting traffic enforcement. The goal is to ensure the safety of officers, emergency responders, and stranded motorists by reminding drivers of their legal responsibility to slow down and change lanes when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights.

This initiative will include participation from Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, and officers from Howard County Police Department, who will conduct enforcement efforts along the Howard County portion of US 29 up to Interstate 70.

Maryland’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching any stopped vehicle displaying warning signals, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, and even disabled vehicles. Violating this law can result in fines and points on a driver’s record.
