Montgomery County Police Caution Against Unlicensed Contractors and Distraction Theft Scams

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 7, 2025

Gaithersburg, MD - As warmer weather returns, the Montgomery County Department of Police is reminding homeowners to stay alert and take precautions when approached by individuals offering home improvement or yardwork services—particularly those who go door-to-door.

Each year, MCPD receives reports about criminal transient groups who offer services such as lawn care, driveway paving, or roof repair. While some may appear professional, many are unlicensed, perform substandard work, or leave without completing the job. In some cases, individuals take payment up front and never return.

To reduce the risk of fraud:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited offers for services, especially when high-pressure tactics are used to secure payment.
  • Avoid paying large sums of money before any work is completed.
  • Confirm that a business or contractor is properly licensed before agreeing to any services.
  • Do not pay large sums of money in advance.
  • Always verify whether a business is licensed before agreeing to services.

Licensing status and complaint history can be verified through the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/ocp.

Residents should also be aware of “distraction thefts” or “distraction burglaries.” These incidents often occur when one or more individuals approach a homeowner outside and engage them in conversation—pretending to offer services or ask questions—while an accomplice enters the home unnoticed to steal valuables.

Safety tips to avoid distraction thefts:

  • Keep doors locked, even while working in the yard.
  • Do not allow strangers inside, even if they claim to be workers or officials, unless they have verified their identity and have an appointment.
  • Report suspicious activity to police immediately.

These crimes can happen quickly and are often targeted at seniors or those home alone during the day.

The Montgomery County Department of Police encourages residents to share this information with neighbors, especially those who may be more vulnerable. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent financial loss and theft.
