County Executive Leggett’s Closing Remarks at the Montgomery County Energy Summit

Silver Spring Civic Building, 1 Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring

As prepared

Good afternoon!

I am pleased to be here today at the Fourth Annual Montgomery County Energy Summit.

Today has been a full and exciting day of workshops, panels, and learning more about what energy efficiency trends can thrive in Montgomery County.

Thank you to the U.S. Green Building Council’s National Capital Region for hosting this event with us. Our continued partnership reflects the County’s commitment to advancing sustainable and resilient building practices.

Throughout the course of the day, you heard success stories of energy efficient Montgomery County buildings that demonstrate the innovation and leadership of our building community.

The sessions highlighted some significant achievements in the County, including:

  • net-zero constructions strategies borne out of a test facility based in Gaithersburg,

  • the first Commercial PACE financing project in Montgomery County and the state of Maryland,

  • the new Green Bank organization to expand clean energy in the County, and

  • other innovative strategies to make buildings more energy efficient.

We hope to see a greater adoption of electric vehicle charging stations, renewable energy through programs like the community solar pilot and buildings that generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions across the County in the year ahead, both in public County facilities and private businesses.

With events like the Montgomery County Energy Summit, we can connect and collaborate with the leaders in the green building field to make energy efficiency accessible for buildings large and small across the County.

I would like to thank all our panelists for sharing their expertise with us here at the Energy Summit. By sharing your case studies and lessons learned, the commercial building community can take these new ideas back to their colleagues and build the next great green building in the County.

Events like the Summit and our other environmental initiatives that engage our commercial building community, show that Montgomery County stands as a leader in cutting-edge energy programs in the nation.

Together, we are demonstrating that efficient commercial buildings and sustainable practices are a foundation for a resilient economy and a thriving community.

Thank you for all your efforts to make the commercial building sector in the County an efficient foundation to our thriving and growing economy.

We appreciate you coming out for another successful and productive Energy Summit, and look forward to seeing you all again next year!
