County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Davis Library Ribbon Cutting

6400 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda

As prepared

Good morning! Thank you for coming out today to celebrate the reopening of the Davis Library.

This is the third ribbon-cutting under the new “refresh” projects, which is the innovative way we take care of our libraries to ensure they get significant and timely updates without having to close our branches for the lengthy time of a full renovation.

Not only does this allow our libraries to close for a shorter time, the “refresh” comes with a cost savings of thousands of dollars.

As you look around today, you see that this strategy is working!

The whole look of the facility has been renewed with the bright colors, new furniture and polished upgrades.

Here is what has been added as result of the recent work:

  • Redesign of the children’s area to provide an expanded space for picture books and early reading materialNew
  • Information and Circulation customer service desk
  • Interior design upgrades such as new carpeting and paint
  • Two new collaboration spaces which provide the community with modern rooms to come together

In addition to the physical improvements in the building, you will find more than 94,000 print books and many technical enhancements such as installation of a mobile device charging station and enhanced Wi-Fi, and other, improved digital resources.

I want to thank Parker Hamilton, our library director, and her staff for all their hard work in planning and preparing for the reopening.

I also want to thank David Dise, our director of General Services, and his staff, who managed the design and construction of this newly refreshed library.

Thank you for coming out today!
