County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the African-American Health Program Community Day

 East County Community Center

3310 Gateshead Manor Way, Silver Spring

 As prepared

Good morning!

I am grateful for the opportunity to be here with all of you today and present a proclamation for this special event.

We have special health challenges in the African American community. This event helps to highlight them and shows you what you can do to live healthier, longer lives.

The mission of the African American Health Program is to eliminate health disparities and improve the number and quality of years of life for African Americans and people of African descent in Montgomery County.

This program focuses on six major areas that include infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, oral health, cardiovascular disease and specific cancers; and also offers outreach services in the area of health education, support groups and nurse case management services.

While the program's offerings are available to ALL interested residents, the audience of focus is the African American community and people of African descent in Montgomery County; to inform, educate and empower African Americans and people of African descent in Montgomery County about healthy life styles and wellness issues impacting their lives, their families and their communities.

This is a large task, requiring a heavy lift; but as I look out and see the dozens of community partners here supporting this great event, I know we are on our way to a healthier and more sustainable community that is stronger and more vibrant.

I wish you a successful day; and I encourage you to take advantage of the onsite health screenings, group activities and healthy lifestyle demonstrations.
